Today is National Sickie Day.

Why, you may ask? It’s because the first Monday of February is traditionally considered the day when employees, in their droves, pull a sickie.

According to the Employment Law Association’s estimates, 350,000 people will have called in sick today. This costs up to £45m to the UK economy due to wages, lost hours and overtime.

Sickie Excuses

Employers have probably heard every excuse in the book as to why an employee can’t come in to work. The Six Nations or the Super Bowl was on, it’s the weekend after pay day, I’m recovering from the post Dry January binge… None of those reasons are good enough and can cause employers a lot of headaches in fulfilling work demands.

Never fear, we have produced a Definitive Guide to Managing Sickness Absence for employers and HR professionals, which will help you deal with all the problems surrounding employees’ sickness absences.

It covers:

  • How to reduce short term sickness absence;
  • How to stop and dismiss malingerers;
  • How to stop small issues escalating;
  • How to manage disabilities; and
  • How to cut the cord on long term absences cases.
